A Battle for Global Values

Listen, I know that Blair is Bush's lap-dog, but let’s give him a chance and read his essay anyways:

Listening and reading Blair makes one long for an articulate leader skilled at oration, something critical in times like these.

I've printed it out for reading, but this passage to me is laughable...

"The Koran is inclusive. It extols science and knowledge and abhors superstition. It is practical and far ahead of its time in attitudes toward marriage, women, and governance."

I can't imagine or invent a religion which, on the whole is more repressive and demeaning toward women, within marriage and without.

Do you think Blair is trying to build a bridge of tolerance between Islam and the West? Throwing moderates a rope that might be otherwise afraid to show dissent?

The thing is, I believe you can find moderate Muslims who share modern attitudes towards marriage, women, and governance, but I don't believe they have these beliefs based on what they find in the Koran.

Yes, that's a good point. I'm sure you're right, in that Blair is building a bridge toward those who've accepted modernity.

I don't know how many of these folks read Foreign Affairs magazine though.

Was this essay made into a speech which was then broadcast?
